Caravan Fitzrovia launches croissant collaboration series
Caravan Fitzrovia will be pimping up its pastries by calling on a handful of top cookery writers and influencers to put their own spin on the humble croissant, as part of a new series.
Launching today, the first three collaborators to be announced are blogger and cookbook author Ed Smith, aka Rocket & Squash; Middle-Eastern food specialist and presenter John Gregory Smith; and Great British Bake Off finalist Kim-Joy who will each be raising funds for a charity of their choice.
Each creation will be on sale for one month only, priced at £3.80, alongside Caravan-to-Go’s range of popular in-house baked goods, including its creative cruffins, breads and brownies. Caravan-to-Go is entirely unique to the Caravan Fitzrovia site, the fifth Caravan restaurant to open in the capital in what was previously the BBC Radio 1 recording studio building.
Each collaborator has been hand-picked for his or her unique and creative culinary identity and prestige as part of the UK food scene. Individually the cooks have been working closely with Caravan’s Chef Director Miles Kirby to bring their pastry vision to life. For every croissant sold, £1 will go towards the influencers chosen cause.
The initial line-up has been announced as follows:
April – Ed Smith @rocketandsquash, creator of Rocket & Squash blog and author of The Borough Market Cookbook has created a Pain au ‘Nduja, a playful take on the pain au chocolat made from ‘Nduja salami, honey, walnuts and sage. Ed’s pastry will draw on some of his favourite flavours, striking the perfect balance of buttery, spicy, savoury and sweet. He has chosen to donate the proceeds to Hospitality Action, which puts hospitality worker’s mental health at the forefront.
May – John Gregory Smith, @johngs the middle-eastern cookery connoisseur, writer and presenter has created a pastry which encapsulates the evocative and delicate flavours of the middle-east and will combine pistachio frangipane, pomegranate seeds and a rose pomegranate glaze. Funds raised will be donated towards The World Food Programme which works closely with vulnerable communities around the globe, in order to improve access to food and nutrition.
June – Kim-Joy @kimjoyskitchen, the Great British Bake Off finalist famed for her kooky and rustic bakery creations which reflect her Malaysian-Chinese heritage, has conceptualised a vibrant cherry and almond croissant, complete with rainbow layering and decorative happy-face. A further three influencers will be announced later in the spring, as Caravan looks to continue with the series throughout the year
