Thomasina Miers & Laura Harper-Hinton return with Fork to Fork Food Festival 2018

Fork to Fork food festival, created by Wahaca co-founder Thomasina Miers and Caravan co-founder Laura Harper-Hinton, will return to north-west London on Saturday June, 16th with a stellar line-up of some of London and the UK’s most loved restaurants, chefs and foodies.

The one-day event, now in its third year, will take place at Ark Franklin Primary Academy in Kensal Rise, and raise funds for the Open Air Classroom project, geared towards teaching children resilience, healthy eating and creative engagement with the curriculum. Leading chefs confirmed to attend this year include Skye Gyngell, Margot Henderson, Yotam Ottolenghi, Jeremy Lee, Jose Pizarro and Brett Graham, amongst many others.

Friends Thomasina and Laura – who are both mothers and local to Kensal Rise – launched Fork to Fork with the aim to champion the benefits of outdoor learning in early child development, the importance of seeing how food grows and to promote a love for fresh fruit and vegetables.

This year’s efforts will further support the national ambitions of a project to blueprint the flagship Open Air Classroom at Ark Franklin. Since launching the festival in 2015 with the support of Ark Franklin head, Janine Ryan, £100k has been raised towards building and developing the facility – the first of its kind in the UK. The next phase of the project is to forge stronger links between the the ingredients grown in the garden and the food cooked in the school kitchen. Findings will ultimately be used as a toolkit to help benefit other schools.

Fork to Fork festival-goers will have the chance to try a number of street food small plates from an unprecedented selection of more than 40 stalls from some of the capital’s most celebrated restaurants. Each plate will be priced at £3.

Restaurants confirmed to attend are: 1 Lombard Street, Bababoom, Bone Daddies, Breddos, Caravan, Chicknsours, Cut & Grind, Chotto Matte, Dishoom, Detox Kitchen, Flat Iron, Gail’s Bakery, Gracelands, Hix, Home Slice pizza, Honest Burger, Jivita Ayureda, Jose Pizarro, Kitty Fishers, Lily Vanilli, L’ami Malo, Moro, Motu, Ottolenghi, Padella, Pastaio, Pho, Pizza Pilgrims, Polpo, Pomonas, Portland, Rochelle Canteen & Bar at ICA, Quo Vadis, Soho House – Chicken Shop, Snaps & Rye, Spring Restaurant, Sophie’s Steakhouse, The Bowler, The Hillgate, The Ledbury, The Whippet Inn, Vinoteca and Wahaca.

Beavertown and Camden Town breweries will be serving a range of craft beers, alongside a bar serving wine and spirits, kombucha from LA Brewery and coffee from Caravan Coffee Roasters. The little ones are catered for with Cawston Press soft drinks and Lickalix healthy ice-lollies.

The 2018 event sponsors, in addition to Caravan and Wahaca, have been confirmed as Winkworth, Lion Trust and Wilcox Burchmore.

Entertainment will include live music across two stages throughout the day, face painting, storytelling and crafts for the little ones, as well as raffle with prizes including luxury hotel stays, restaurant vouchers, cook books, beauty products and food hampers.

Both Thomasina and Laura felt compelled to take action following the discovery of some salient facts regarding children’s welfare in the UK. This included findings about the increasing rates of childhood obesity, rising cases of depression in young people and evidence showing that the physical and mental health of British children has deteriorated significantly in recent years. According to DEFRA, the likelihood of a child visiting any sizeable outside green space has halved in a generation

Alongside its Open Air Classroom, Ark Franklin is preparing to pilot two new food education projects, Flavour School and Chefs in Schools, both with a national ambition to improve food education and tackle obesity rates.
